HDMI 2.1
HDMI 2.1 Bandwidth and Features:
The new features of HDMI 2.1 include 48Gb maximum bandwidth, and new features such as eARC, VRR, QFT, QMS, ALLM, and DSC.
HDMI 2.1 bandwidth
Compared with 2.0, HDMI 2.1 adopts FRL mode (Fixed RateLink) to transmit high-speed data in 4 data channels. FRL bandwidth can be 6, 8, 10 and 12Gb, so HDMI 2.1 has four rates of 24, 32, 40 and 48Gb. .
PS5 bandwidth 32Gb;
XSX bandwidth 40Gb;
RTX3080 bandwidth 48Gb;
48Gb bandwidth can achieve 4K 120hz 12bit 444;
40Gb bandwidth can achieve 4K 120hz 10bit 444;
32Gb bandwidth capable of 4K 120hz 10bit 422
eARC Enhanced Audio Return:
eARC is the enhanced (Enhanced) ARC, Chinese full name: enhanced audio return function, is a standard function of the HDMI 2.1 interface. The bandwidth has become 37Mb, which can transmit next-generation lossless audio tracks, including:
Dolby TrueHD, AC-4, Dolby Atmos, DTS HDMA, DTS:X, LPCM 7.1
That is to say, the eARC channel takes all the audio formats currently on the market, whether it is lossless or 32-channel.
VRR variable refresh rate:
VRR variable refresh rate can be seen as an enhanced version of vertical sync technology, the purpose is to prevent tearing.
VRR is an important feature of next-generation game consoles and game graphics cards. Currently, the Xbox Series X, PS5 and RTX30 series all support VRR.
VRR requires both the source device and the display device to support it to work properly.
There are three VRR technologies we see on a monitor or TV:
Adaptive Sync is the VRR standard of VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association), which is a standard function of the DisplayPort 1.2a interface. If the monitor is equipped with a DP 1.2 interface, it must support the Adaptive Sync function;
Free Sync is AMD’s customized and commercial version of Adaptive Sync. Free Sync is also the VRR technology used by graphics cards above Xbox and RX200 series, supporting HDMI and DP interfaces.
