According to the latest research report published by market research firm In-Stat, devices equipped with DisplayPort interface will be on the market this year, and the competing DVI technology will be driven out of the market by 2011. DisplayPort interface is a new PC/monitor interface technology. Shipments of DisplayPort interface devices in 2008 were limited, but by 2012, DisplayPort interface device shipments will exceed 600 million.
PC and LCD makers have been looking for this interface technology for many years, In-Stat analysts said. Although the VGA interface is used in both markets, it is an old analog technology that cannot handle the increasing resolutions in today’s computing environment. Although DVI (Digital Visual Interface) can support higher resolution than VGA, DVI uses an older raster/scan technology and has limited bandwidth, so it has not been popularized in currently shipped PCs. Highlights of this report include:
From 2008 to 2012, DisplayPort interface device shipments will grow at an annual rate of 243%.
The DisplayPort interface offers data transfer speeds of 10.8GB, offers a micro-socket architecture and a scalable design that can increase data transfer speeds in the future.
